Racial Justice NEXT STEPS and TAKE ACTION LIST

What can I do for Racial Justice?

Pray

  • Add racial justice prayers to Prayers of the Faithful during Mass
  • Hold a prayer service devoted to the theme of racial justice
  • Join the Diocese with Six Days of Prayer and Fasting For Peace, Justice, and Reconciliation, in honor of Venerable Father Augustus Tolton
  • Organize a novena or other prayer opportunity
  • Participate in future racial justice themed pilgrimages

Educate

Voting and Politics

  • Gather resources for elections and share
  • Volunteer as a precinct delegate
  • Get involved in campaigns that promote restorative justice, bail reform, sentencing reform, police accountability
  • Vote for judges, prosecutors, sheriffs, city council, county representatives, legislators who support racial justice
  • Contact elected officials and let them know racial justice is important
  • Contact elected officials and advocate for restorative justice 
  • Join community protests, in person or virtual

Personal Actions

  • Contact Bishop Boyea and support the efforts of the diocese Task Force on Race and Catholic School so that all children feel welcome
  • Contact St. Francis School and support the implementation of the diocese’s racism education program
  • Contact Father James and thank him for strongly speaking out against racism
  • Complete the census form to improve our region’s ability to get funding for justice programs
  • Volunteer for the Poor People’s Campaign
  • Volunteer for the parish jail ministry
  • Help develop or participate in new advocacy opportunities – i.e. court appearances
  • Love your neighbor – listen to others teach us about their pain and triumph
  • Love your neighbor – participate in interfaith programs, including Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice
  • Love your neighbor – join activities with our sister parish, Corpus Christi in Detroit
  • Love your neighbor – get to know fellow parishioners
  • Talk with family and friends about the harm of hatred and systemic racism
