The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to the religious formation of young children that allows for the development of Faith using the methods of Maria Montessori.
Children gather in a room prepared for them, which contains simple yet beautiful materials for them to play and interact with. A young child, yet unable to read, can begin to understand a biblical passage or a prayer from the liturgy by taking the created objects that represent that text and by working (playing) with it – placing wood figures of sheep in a sheepfold of the Good Shepherd, setting sculpted apostles around a Last Supper table, or preparing a small altar with the furnishings used for the Eucharist.
Classes at St. Francis begin September 16 with an open house and run most Sundays for two hours (10:20 a.m.-12:20 pm). Parents may choose the frequency of classes for their child to attend, either every Sunday or two Sundays a month.
