Why MPRI ??? Why Should I Get Involved Now???
In the past, Washtenaw County has had the highest recidivism rate in
the state of Michigan. The most recent survey found that 76% of
those coming from prison back to our county end up returning to prison
within two years. It's this kind of challenge that
gave rise to The Michigan Prisoner ReEntry Initiative (MPRI). The
MPRI program has now been up and running in Washtenaw County for just over
a year.
The success of the MPRI program is a result of the government/community
collaborative of public and private agencies that must to work together
in partnership for returning citizens to be successful.
We need your help. ... ... We hope that you, or some
representatives from your congregation or community organization, will
join us.
MPRI successes include:
-
*Creating a network of landlords willing to rent to our clients
-
*Creating
a transitional employment program so those coming out of prison can have
immediate work while they begin to readjust
-
*An
ever increasing pool of employers willing to hire someone who has been
in prison
-
*Receiving
a major grant for a pilot project to show the difference it can make when
those who are coming out of prison with a serious mental illnesses are
provided special supportive housing
-
*A weekly
program where over 85% of our clients have met with local law enforcement
for lunch and support

bus home and getting picked up by a MPRI Volunteer Driver. There
will also be opportunities to discuss and practice responses to potential
challenges and opportunities.

Are You Going to Prison?
Would You Like To?
New Life Ministry is offering a one-day training seminar for those people
who are interested in becoming volunteers to mentor ex-offenders upon their
re-entry into the community. Contact: Colleen

Mentor an Ex-Offender:
You can make all the difference in the life of a person paroled from
prison, returning to our area, by joining a team of trained mentors that
help provide for the daily support and friendship needs that often make
the difference between surviving on the outside and returning to a life
of crime and then to prison.
The Office of Restorative Justice Lansing Diocese is sponsoring a diocesan
wide effort to find and train volunteers from our parish to become ex-offender
mentors. The "Michigan Prisoner Re-entry Initiative" progam is starting
& our local government services are prepared to help provide for the
needs of parolees returning to our area of Washtenaw County, but, they
cannot provide the daily support and friendship that will often make the
difference. You can make all the difference by joining a team of
trained mentors.
A mentor team (of at least 30 members, both men & women) will be
established for service in our County. Each mentor in the mentor group
would be trained to work as a team member with other mentors and would
commit to a specific task in assisting the ex-offenter in his/her transition.
All mentors will go through a thorough training done by experienced mentors
in our diocese and the Department of Corrections and Michigan Works personnel.

Prisoner Aftercare
Dear Christians,
There is a great need to recruit “letter writing mentors” to be matched
with an inmate serving life. The mentor would never meet the prisoner
face to face. Someone would write the prisoner twice a month and maintain
a Christ centered relationship. Retired men are perfect for this ministry.
Letter correspondence for a prisoner serving life can be the most important
thing going on in his/her life. The correspondence can feed a soul
spiritually and save a person from sinking into deep despair- even suicide.
Through letter discourse we can strengthen the Church on the inside and
they will take the message to others who we cannot reach. There is
also a need for women to write female prisoners who are serving long sentences.
These prisoners have genuinely received Jesus Christ, and they are mature
and well read; they have something to say.
USP Terre Haute is the maximum security site for the Life Connections
Program, politically known as the President’s Faith Based Initiative.
Thank you for your time and effort,
