GOING SOUTH: Preparing to go again            (August 2006)
As we begin to prepare for our next trip to help New Orleans with the clean-up from hurricane Katrina, we will be sharing some of our reflections about our last April 2006 trip in this column over the next several weeks.

This week one of our St. Francis Parish - Going South - member’s thoughts were published in the New Orleans newspaper, the Times Picayune.

To read the other emails and to read the actual article, please read GUTTING_HOUSES_IN_NEW_ORLEANS.htm

Hurricane Katrina Clean-Up Trip
Going South 2006
A group of St. Francis parishioners went on what we called, "GOING SOUTH" April 22-30 under the auspices of Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans, “Operation Helping Hands”  to assist the community in reoccupying their homes & clean-up from the hurricanes.   Here are photos from before we went.
We were gutting houses, i.e. removing household goods, furniture, appliances, damaged walls, ceilings, floors and wiring.   After  clearing the home it is then sprayed with a sanitizing solution to kill bacteria. For more information about "Operation Helping Hands:"see this Word document.

Caring for Katrina Communities     Help is urgently needed in communities struggling to recover from Hurricane Katrina.  Groups of 10-15, are encouraged to come and serve as good neighbors to those in affected areas.  Volunteers will help clear debris, remove sheetrock and assist with cleanup of homes, yards, streets, and neighborhoods.  One-week stay, or long weekend, 8 hrs. per day.  Simple meals and basic accommodations provided by the parish and/or parishioners.  Volunteers should be willing and able to assist with the physical tasks involved.  No special skills required, but those with chainsaws and experience operating them can be helpful.  Volunteers who speak Spanish would be an asset in one particular parish.  Bring your people skills and good neighbor spirit!   Contact:  Rachel Lustig, Catholic Charities USA  ( ) or (703-549-1390, ext. 174).   Learn more at: www.catholiccharitiesusa.org  .
