    Going South
    Hurricane Katrina Clean-Up Trip(s)
    GOING SOUTH TO NEW ORLEANS

As part of our effort to be part of the long-term solution to the challenges to the people of New Orleans wrought by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, we have had six different groups from St. Francis Parish "GOING SOUTH" to New Orleans to assist Catholic Charities of New Orleans in gutting houses and/or beginning the rebuilding.  We also attend mass and visit with the community of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, our twin parish.

Our next groups are Going South to New Orleans -

Young People - December 2008   (All college students are invited to join us for a special Service Trip to New Orleans. We leave December 14, 2008, & return December 22, 2008. For more information, contact Jen Delvaux at 734-821-2126 or via email,      )

Adults - 2009 perhaps in February.  YOU are invited to join us as we help rebuild homes with Catholic Charities of New Orleans.

The sign-up application & more information about the program is posted here.   Under the auspices of Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans, "Operation Helping Hands" we went to gut houses (i.e. removing household goods, furniture, appliances, damaged walls, ceilings and floors.)  wearing protective gear. We also visited out twin parish, St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.

March 8-15, 2008: THANK YOU to the St. Francis Parish Community

from Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of New Orleans
THANK YOU to the St. Francis Parish Community from
Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of New Orleans

In appreciation of the financial, spiritual, and physical support from the entire St. Francis parish community, volunteers were specially recognized at a Volunteer Dinner at the headquarters of Operation Helping Hands.  On behalf of our parish, the team working in New Orleans March 8 – 15, 2008, was presented with a painting of St. Louis Cathedral, the well-known landmark on Jackson Square.  In our third year of sending teams to help gutting and rebuilding, we were pleased to accept this award on behalf of St. Francis parish community.  (Currently the painting is displayed on the wall in the main entrance to the church.)
We also placed a handprint from our team on the wall of volunteers, and we toured a completed home. The more than 90 people who have traveled to New Orleans on behalf of St. Francis over the past three years, know that we are only a small part of the contributions made to the recovery effort. True support has come from the entire St. Francis community. We were honored to be there for you.
